Day 1 at Zambi Wildlife Retreat
I arrived at Zambi at 7:45 am. Everyone meets in the office in the morning to read the diary of the day before and we get briefed on what is needed to be done. As it was my first day the first thing I had to do was read through some handbooks and standard operating procedures. There was a lot to read so by the time I was done it was time for morning tea. After morning tea I was given a tour of the grounds and told which areas I was not allowed near without a supervisor. I was also told about the placement process and that everyone starts in the farmyard then moves on to repltiles, birds, primates, dingos and then the big cats. My first job of the day was to clean out the chicken house. I had a duck named “quackers” to keep me company he was quite funny. He is scared of water and wags his tail when he is happy to see you and likes to nip at your ankles while you are working. After lunch I made up the afternoon feed for the farmyard which is the chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, pigs and donkeys. There is also a deer named strawberry with her goat friend named cream in the farmyard. I then got to meet the pigs Wilbur, Charlotte and Theo while another volunteer and I cleaned out their area before we fed them. We then checked that all the animals were accounted for, had water and were secure and then we were finished for the day. I left at 4:30 pm. It was exhausted but it was a great first day.
